Manny Perez was born in Cuba in 1947. He immigrated to the United States in 1961 initially without his family through the program known as Pedro Pan.
Manny has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology. He has no formal training in art.
His professional career has centered on computer science and software. Manny’s artistic activities have been motivated by a number of interests, some stemming from his profession, that are centered on Mathematics and Philosophy, particularly the areas of Aesthetics, Ontology and Epistemology.
Mathematicians do not just look for solutions to theoretical or practical problems, they are also driven by an aesthetic of elegant simplicity. A new insight is judged not only by its relevance but also by how it is constructed and communicated with economy of means. Manny looks at his art as a way to communicate, with a similar aesthetic, profound truths about reality and Man’s grasp of those truths and his condition within that reality.
Of late, his focus has been on the number one, both the concept and the symbol, as a representation tool – both concrete and profoundly abstract. In a way, to reduce our reality and condition to symbols, as modern technology reduces our voices, our images, our knowledge, and even our existence, to a series of numbers.
